Harbor Freight Revolving Storage Bin

I touched on this the other day in my Project Life pages but the Studio Calico message board went crazy for this Harbor Freight 12" Revolving Storage bin. Everyone wanted one and apparently so many people bought them that they were out of stock for awhile.  They finally got more in and about a week ago I ordered mine.

We've been having really great weather this week and I knew I wanted to paint mine like many of the other ladies did so I went and purchased my primer and paint from Orchard Supply.  I used exactly what others had used, the Rust-Oleum’s Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2x primer and paint.  I chose to used white primer and a yellow colored paint it was called Satin Stawflower.

Here's a look at the box opened an laid out.  Yes it had a lot of parts but my husband and I assembled it in about 20 minutes.  We each put together two of the trays and it went pretty fast once you got the hang of it.  He did take more time later to tighten down all the nuts and bolts prior to painting.

Here's what it looks like loosely assembled prior to painting. You certainly could leave it this way, there is nothing wrong with it being black but I felt it would be easier to see things inside the trays if it was a lighter color.

Here's a picture of my husband putting on the primer coat.  We took the advice of others from the message board and painted it before the final assembly, it certainly made it easier to get down into the sections when it was laid out this way (please forgive the grainy photo its from my phone at a distance so I had to zoom in). I have to give my husband all the credit for the painting.  He is much better than me at this kind of stuff and I would have made a horrible mess of it.

I purchased 2 cans of primer and 2 cans of the color just in case and he only used one of each. The can recommends light coats so that's what he did.  He did two coats of primer and let them dry about 20 minutes between.  He then set it aside over night and let it dry.  The next day he did two coats of the finish paint and let them dry over night as well.  Here it is on my desk.

I haven't filled it yet, I wanted to wait a full 24 hours before I started loading it up so it would really cure.  He did such a great job on the painting!  I know I'm going to love this thing and can see why others are picking up more than one but the way my desk is, I only have the space for one.  It's going to hold a ton of stuff so that's awesome and the lighter color will definitely make it easy to find things.  I plan to put a lot of stuff that I have on this shelf that sits right behind my desk in it.  For sure the small rolling stamps, stamp pads and the small items in the plastic drawers on top.

As far as cost goes, it was pretty economical for all the storage space it will provide.  I had a coupon code for Harbor Freight so with shipping it cost $26.37.  I would have loved to by it in store and not pay shipping but none of the stores near us had it in stock.  The cans of paint were $3.99 each plus tax so that's $8.59 for the 2 cans of paint so for $35.00 I'm pretty happy with it.

Enjoy your weekend!  I'll see you back on Monday for a weekend recap.

  2. Thank you so much for posting these instructions! I picked up the last one they had at my closest Harbor Freight about a month ago, but have been too intimidated by all the pieces and the fear of ruining it with a bad paint job to actually put it together! I'm inspired to track down that brand of paint this weekend and get it done! Thanks so much! Yours looks fab!

    1. I wish I could help but I did not keep my instructions. I did check the Harbor Freight website and they do have a link to the manual but the link is not valid. If you haven't I would call or email them since it was their error that it wasn't included in your box.

    1. I'm sorry to hear that. Sadly this post is so old and I'm sure things come and go in their inventory. I don't have an alternate to suggest but I hope you find something similar out there.
